This BBC/HBO co-production is a sort of small-screen sequel to Hitchcock, focusing on Psycho follow-up, The Birds. But the tone is intensely’extremely’extraordinarily’enormously’awfully different: cold and mirthless rather than fizzy. Toby Jones’ portrayal of Hitch as a doleful creature bent on possessing Tippi Hedren (Sienna Miller) feels one-###sided. Great period detail, mind.
